Keeping Watch

These two female lions in Masai Mara were keeping watch over some cubs that were playing nearby.  The sun was setting and the young cubs were very rambunctious.  I’ll share a photo of the cubs soon.

Deep in Thought

This is one of my favorite lion images from our trip to Kenya in 2011.  I’ve posted the image before in color and now here is my latest version in black and white.  I’m not really sure which I prefer.  I was inspired to play with this a bit tonight after visiting the opening reception during 1st Thursday in Santa Barbara.  It was an exhibit featuring large-scale photographs by Nick Brandt memorializing the vanishing grandeur of the natural world of East Africa.

Composition

I’ve been playing with various photographic compositional techniques over the past few weeks.  Here are some shots that show you what I’ve been up to.

ANGLES

Here is my hero shot, taken on a hike in the foothills of Santa Barbara.

So, the hero shot is taken from below, so here’s a shot taken from a trail we were hiking high above the roads on the Amalfi Coast a couple of months ago.

RULE OF THIRDS

The focal point of this image is the lemurs face, which is positioned according to the rule of thirds.

And one more example from Kenya…

DEPTH OF FIELD

Here is an image I’ve posted before on this site, but clearly demonstrates the concept.

SHOOTING VERTICAL

This is perhaps, one of my favorite ways to shoot.  In fact, I usually have to force myself to take a horizontal shot where most people I know are forcing themselves to take the vertical.

There are loads of other examples I could post here and one day, I just might do that.  I’ve played with cropping and isolation techniques, filling the frame (another of my favorites), emphasizing foregrounds, finding patterns in nature and demonstrating scale.  All very fun and useful techniques.

Playful Lion Cubs in Kenya

During our visit to Kenya this past summer, we had a chance to sit and watch some lion cubs at play.  They stalked each other, rolled around together and generally played as if no-one was watching.  Here the cub is stalking something that should never be found in the wild…

He gets much closer now and takes a moment to see if any of his brothers or sisters are jealous.  He finds that they are content to allow him to capture the dangerous prey…

He wrestles the competitor for his prey.  In this case, his competitor is the tree and the prey, well that is just an old blue rag someone left behind in the wild.

Now, all he has to do is get off this tree and playfully shove it in his siblings noses and run off.  He’s sure to make them chase them with this fantastic catch!

In the end, the other lion cubs took off with his prized catch and HE watched with envy from the sidelines…
